England cricketer Jonny Bairstow dominated out of T20 World Cup after freak golf harm

“Unfortunately I will not be available for any games/tours in the immediate future,” Bairstow wrote on Instagram. “The reason is that I injured my lower leg in a freak accident and it will need an operation.

“The harm occurred after I slipped on the golf course this morning. I am disgusted and to begin with want everybody this week at The Oval all the perfect and the boys going to Australia for the T20 World Cup. Completely disgusted! I can be again.”

The England and Wales Cricket Board said in a statement that Bairstow would see a specialist next week about the injury to “examine the complete extent”. Bairstow’s absence is a blow for England. He is an in-form senior player and the top scorer in Test cricket this year.

A replacement in the T20 World Cup squad that travel to Australia next month has not been named. Nottinghamshire’s Ben Duckett has been added to the squad for the third Test against South Africa.

Veteran fly-half Jason Roy has been left out of the T20 World Cup squad but could be back in contention with Bairstow out. Roy had a bad summer with England and in The Hundred, averaging 8.5 in six innings for Oval Invincibles and three ducks. Fast bowlers Mark Wood and Chris Woakes have been included in the 15-man squad despite last appearing on the West Indies Test Tour in March.

The T20 World Cup starts on October 16. England will welcome 19 players for their seven-game T20 series in Pakistan from this month – their first tour of the country since 2005 – before moving on to Australia.

Captain Jos Buttler will lead the trip, but his calf injury will likely rule him out of the early stages of the Pakistan series. Moeen Ali will take over as skipper for these games.

England: Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.
